When we hear the phrase expanding our consciousness, many of us instinctively think of going outward—reaching further, stretching beyond ourselves. Yet, true expansion begins by coming inward.
So often, we get caught in polarity. Right versus wrong. Good versus bad. Black versus white. These mental entanglements keep us locked in struggle, unable to rise above the push and pull. The truth is: we cannot expand our consciousness from that place.
The first and most important step in expansion is finding neutrality.
The Power of Neutral Space
Neutrality doesn’t mean indifference. It means releasing our grip on judgments, opinions, and rigid preferences. (Preferences, I often say, are just judgments with a hall pass.)
Inside of you, there exists a deep well—a space of equanimity where everything is allowed to simply be. When you sit back into this inner space, something profound happens:
- A sense of openness emerges.
- You feel a subtle but undeniable elevation, like gaining altitude.
- From this higher vantage point, life looks different.
This sensation—of altitude, openness, and elevation—is the experience of expanding your consciousness.
An Exercise for Expansion
Let’s try a short practice together:
- Enter Neutrality: Breathe, soften, and allow yourself to step back into that inner space where nothing has to be right or wrong.
- Bring in a Challenge: Think of something in your life that feels heavy or unresolved.
- View from Higher Ground: From your neutral space, look at this challenge with fresh eyes. Notice what you see that you’ve never noticed before.
- Ask the Question: Why have I never seen this challenge from this viewpoint?
- Receive the Answer: Stay open and allow your higher consciousness to bring forward new insights.
Even a few minutes in this practice can shift your awareness, dissolving struggle and bringing clarity.
Expansion Beyond Thought
You can’t think your way into expanded consciousness—it’s something you feel. It’s an energetic shift, a soul-level opening that invites your higher self into the conversation.
The next time you find yourself entangled in judgment or polarity, I invite you to pause. Step back into neutrality. Notice the lift in your perspective. This is where your consciousness expands—and where new possibilities emerge.
✨ I’d love to hear from you: What did you experience in this practice? Were you able to see your challenge from a new vantage point? Share your reflections with me—I can’t wait to hear.
