Slow Down
Slowing down? Not in my plan. It wasn’t in my realm. Slow down to discover my life? I hadn’t a clue!
It was 1993, and I was the Director of Revenue Management at the Marriott Cypress Creek Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. My boss, Greg, pulled me into his office one day, visibly frustrated. Nose to nose, he yelled the politically correct version of “slow the f*ck down” and said, “You are wound WAY TOO TIGHT!”
And I was.
Over the years, my go-go-go, run-run-run, do-do-do mentality became my M.O. I thought being the busiest person in the room would make me seem more important. I skipped water cooler chats, avoided office trivia, and never took a breath, convincing myself that constant action equaled value.
This pattern owned me until five days before my 47th birthday, when I was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer. That moment stopped me in my tracks. Forced to pause, I asked myself a critical question: “Where did my life go?”
The Cost of Never Slowing Down
We fragment ourselves. Splinter our energy. Drain our life force. All because we’re rarely fully present in the moment.
- Chasing the future: Always rushing toward the next thing, worried about tomorrow.
- Fixating on the past: Harboring resentments, nursing grudges, or longing for what was.
Rarely do we stop to simply be here, now.
Why the rush? If we’re honest, most of the urgency is in our heads. It’s a construct—a way to fill the empty spaces, avoid our feelings, or numb discomfort.
For too long, I missed the moments right in front of me. Life was slipping through my fingers. I grew up mimicking my father’s workaholic patterns—he died at 44. Facing my own mortality at 47, I realized: “I need to slow the fk down, or I’m going to die too.”
