For most of us, the idea of “power” has been shaped by the world outside of us. We’re taught to associate it with achievement, approval, and accolades—external markers that confirm we’re doing something right. But what happens when the applause fades? Or when we fall short of expectations?
In her brilliant TED Talk How to Be You, Caroline McHugh describes two extremes many of us cycle through: superiority and inferiority. On a good day, we might feel invincible—confident, successful, and “in flow.” But the pendulum can swing fast. One setback, one piece of criticism, and we collapse inward, believing we’re not enough.
This exhausting cycle is driven by the ego—either puffed up or deflated—and both versions keep us tethered to something outside of ourselves.
But there’s another way.
Interiority.
It’s a term Caroline uses, and it beautifully aligns with what I call authentic power. It’s the strength that comes not from what you do, but from who you are. Not from applause, but from alignment. It’s the confidence to pull a raspberry seed out of your teeth mid-video (true story) and keep going, because you’re not performing. You’re simply being.
Authentic power arises when you trust your inner knowing above all else. It’s the magnetic energy of living in integrity with your soul. And the more you express it—whether by speaking your truth, creating from the heart, or simply showing up fully as yourself—the stronger it becomes.
We live in a world that constantly encourages conformity. But your soul isn’t here to follow. It’s here to lead—through presence, purpose, and truth.
